¡Quién me lo iba a decir! Me apetecía desde hace tiempo compartir barra y anécdotas con algunos amigos bartenders de por ahí y me apunté al Concurso Internacional de Cócteles Angostura 2010.
Resulta que he ganado la fase de España y clasificado para participar en Londres, compitiendo con el resto de Europa (UK, Francia, Italia, Chipre, Grecia, Alemania, Rusia, países bálticos y nórdicos) y por lo visto alguno de Oriente Medio, según información que me llega por aquí y por allá, el próximo sábado 16 de octubre en el Rum Fest.
Y el caso es que caminando por las calles de Nueva York la semana pasada (esa es otra historia sobre la que escribiré pronto), conversaba con dos grandes cocteleros a los que admiro y quienes nos hemos hecho amigos, Giuseppe Santamaria y Félix Lizarraga, acerca del concurso y me alegró saber que Giuseppe se había inscrito; no tanto por que no clasificara él (que no es motivo de alegría, por su puesto), sino porque no sabía si alguien más había enviado sus recetas. Unos días más tarde recibí un email, efectivamente, con la lista de participantes. Chicos, bien hecho, sin ironías; deberíamos quedar un día a tomar algo. Espero representaros dignamente... Y gracias, Giuseppe, por tu sincera felicitación y ánimos. Ahora queda ver si empaco el bañador o no para marzo.
¡Sería tremendo ganar allí y hacer el viajecito a Trinidad! Pero la verdad es que en varios de esos países que estarán representados en Londres hay mucho nivel y vete tú a saber qué se les ha ocurrido. Tengo curiosidad por esa tendencia que hay por ahí de usar curry...
Se supone que ya cada uno ha decidido su cóctel para concursar, y no se aceptan cambios, pero dejaré las recetas detalladas para después del fin de semana. De momento os adelanto algunas imágenes de los cócteles: "Mrs. George Sand" y "Mónica".

What were the odds! For a while now I've felt like sharing the stick and anecdotes with some friends, fellow bartenders out there, so I entered the International Angostura Cocktail Competition 2010 and sent my two recipes...
Well, it happens to be that I won the Spanish round and therefore qualified for the next one in London, competing with the rest of Europe (UK, France, Italy, Cyprus, Greece, Germay, Russia, baltic and nordic countries) and Middle East, according to some info come to my inbox, next saturday october the 16th at London Rum Fest.
The thing is, last week, while walking around New York City (that's another story I'll write about soon), I was chatting with a couple of great bartenders whom I really admire as cocktail crafters and with whom I've made friends, Giuseppe Santamaria and Félix Lizarraga, about the contest and I was so glad that Giuseppe had also entered the competition; not because he didn't qualified for the next round (wich is not, of course, a motif of joy), but because I didn't really know if anyone had actually entered their recipes at all. A couple of days later I received an email, indeed, with the list of participants. Guys, well done, seriously, no sarcasm intended; we should meet one day for a drink. I hope to be up the par representing you honourably. And thank you, Giuseppe, for your sincere congrats and support. Now let's see if I shall or shall not pack my swimming costume for next march.
It'd be awesome to win there and enjoy the trip to Trinidad! But the truth is in many of those countries that will be represented in London, there's such talented bartenders with great ideas, that who knows what sort of things they might come up with. I'm curious about that trend of using curry...
We all are supposed to have decided our cocktails for the competition and no changes are allowed, but I'll leave the detailed recipes for later, when the weekend is gone. For the time being, here I post a couple of images of the cocktails: "Mrs. George Sand" and "Mónica".
